Need some help: Drupal from EPEL on CentOS 5

Tonight I setup a few virtualized CentOS 5 servers and installed Drupal 5 from EPEL.  Everything was going so well until I tried to run the Drupal installer.

The Drupal installer requires write permissions to ./sites/default/settings.php during the installation process.

Great, except that file already has 666 permissions set!  I’ve gone rounds with it and I just can’t figure it out.   Is there anyone running Drupal from EPEL that might have tweaked something post install?
